U.Porto students "kill" in the National University Championships

The University of Porto traveled in large numbers to Lisbon to compete in the Individual National University Championships in Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis and Chess. Also in the same week, the U.Porto was present at the CNU de Futebol 7 Feminino and Golf.

The final balance could not have been better with the rise to the podium of the U.Porto in all modalities.

The highlight goes to the “cleaning” at the CNU of Table Tennis, in which the U.Porto won all possible medals for women and men, in a competition that had the participation of 25 student athletes.

The new female and male national university champions are Inês Matos (FFUP) and José Miguel Magalhães (FEP), followed by runners-up Joana Lopes (ICBAS) and Gonçalo Gomes (FADEUP), and, closing the podium, also from U.Porto, student athletes Maria Matos (FEP) and Pedro Moreira (FEP).

The U.Porto was also crowned national university champion in chess, in the rapid category, with the student athlete José Francisco Veiga (FEUP), and also climbed to third place on the podium with José Sereno Santos (FEUP).

As for the semi-rapid races, Francisco Veiga won another silver medal for the U.Porto.

At CNU Badminton, student-athlete Mariana Pinto Leite (FMUP) won the bronze medal. The CNU of Individual Badminton received 14 female and 16 male student athletes from 12 clubs and Higher Education Institutions across the country.

Finally, in Individual Tennis, which took place on the 24th and 25th of May, in the female sector, the U.Porto student-athletes, Mafalda Guedes Araújo (FMDUP) and Rita Silva (FCUP), faced off in the final, winning respectively, the gold and silver medal.

In turn, Sebastião Cortez (FFUP) became national university champion, in the male sector.

The last incursion to the south of the country was carried out by the Women's 7-a-side of the U.Porto that, after two days of intense competition, managed to renew the title of national university vice-champion.

Adding victories to the three games played in the first phase of the tournament, the U.Porto guaranteed its presence in the decisive game after defeating the Academic Association of the University of Minho in the semi-finals.

Grit and love shirt, demonstrated throughout the competition, were in evidence in the final disputed with the Academic Association of the University of Coimbra. The confrontation was resolved on penalties, with luck falling to the side of Coimbra.

Guided by coach Daniel Chaves, the U.Porto delegation was made up of student athletes Sofia Barroso (FADEUP), Nádia Silva (ICBAS), Joana Monteiro (FPCEUP), Joana Ferreira (FADEUP), Ema Gonçalves (FADEUP), Laura Campos ( FADEUP), Mariana Oliveira (FEP), Mariana Ferreira (FMUP), Ana Marinho (FCUP), Catarina Pereira (ICBAS), Inês Valente (ICBAS), Camila Silva (FADEUP), Sofia Scapini (FMDUP) and Catarina Monteiro (FEP) .

The sports week closed with a golden key, with yet another demonstration of strength by the U.Porto team at the CNU de Golf, which took place on the 27th and 28th of May, in Vale Pisão, Santo Tirso.

The brothers Maria Teresa Alves and Vasco Alves, both students at FEUP, took on the role of protagonists by winning the two titles – female and male – in dispute.

In the women's sector, Inês dos Santos (FEUP) and Francisca Abreu (FMDUP) reached, respectively, second and third place in the competition.

In addition to the winning student-athletes, the U.Porto team also included students Pedro Pedrosa (FEUP), Hugo Freitas (FADEUP) and Tomás Ribeiro (FPCEUP).
