The importance of nutrition in combating endometriosis

Article by Joana Resende, Nutritionist of the UPFit Program.

Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease with a multifactorial nature. It is characterized by the growth of tissue similar to the endometrium outside the uterine cavity, and can affect various parts of the body, such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder and intestine.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

It mainly affects women of childbearing age and the main symptoms are:

  • Menstrual cramps.
  • Pain or discomfort during and after intercourse with menstruation.
  • Pain when urinating or defecating during the menstrual period.
  • Difficulty getting pregnant or infertility.

Nutrition can be an important ally in treatment as it can help reduce estrogen levels and control oxidative stress and inflammation, which are characteristic of the disease. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is essential to alleviate symptoms, including good eating habits, regular exercise and adequate hydration throughout the day.

Nutritional strategy suggestions from the UPFit Program Nutritionist:

  1. Reduction of dietary fat content:
    1. Reduce consumption of red meat, pastries and processed foods.
    2. Eat more oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, oilseeds and seeds such as flaxseed, food products rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
  2. Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables: due to their high fiber, vitamin and mineral content, which gives them important antioxidant properties to control inflammation.
    1. Red fruits, citrus fruits, vegetables, ginger and turmeric should be included in your daily diet.
  3. Supplementation, subject to individual assessment: omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D, C and E, N-acetylcysteine and magnesium may be an aid in treatment.

What is there to know about treatment?

A multidisciplinary approach is essential for proper treatment and improving quality of life. Monitoring by a nutritionist is crucial to help minimize some of the symptoms of this condition, giving you a better quality of life and well-being.
